Root canal. These words have a negative connotation, but they don't have to! A root canal is a procedure that removes the nerve from the tooth and replaces it with a filling material to keep it sealed and safe from bacteria. Using local anesthesia, we can make the procedure comfortable for it's duration. Many of our patients even fall asleep while it's being performed!
At Filliman Dental, we use the latest equipment and technology to make root canal therapy faster and more efficient. With the use of our cone beam (3d scan) machine, we can even find canals and cracks that used to hide with traditional x-rays to give your teeth a better long term prognosis. We want your teeth to last a lifetime!
Why do teeth need root canals?
The most common reason teeth need root canal treatment is due to large cavities. Cavities are areas of active bacterial proliferation. When this bacteria reaches the center of the tooth, they make themselves at home, protected from your body's natural bacteria fighting mechanisms. If left untreated, this bacteria and use your tooth as a highway to move elsewhere in the body causing infections, swelling and dental abscesses. If you have a tooth that is constantly hurting or is very sensitive to hot or cold, you may have a cavity that may lead to the need for root canal therapy.
Another common reason a tooth may need root canal therapy is trauma. Trauma due to a fall, car accident or a simple bump to the face can disrupt the blood supply to your tooth and cause it to become non-vital or dead. This can result in an abscess or discoloration/darkening of your tooth. Root canal therapy is needed to clean out the byproducts produced from your dying tooth and prevent future complications.
